Scrounging for Cheap Computers

Find a cheap computer is like a treasure hunt. Using the guidelines from the previous search, it is time to dig out the treasure map and start searching for that great deal.

So where do you start searching:

  • Do you have an existing computer that is no longer useable for any supported version of Microsoft Windows? One of the machines used in the test bench stopped being Microsoft Windows compatible after Me. It still requires a serial mouse, but it works. It is now running Debian GNU/Linux, and with a little scavenging through the spare parts box, sports 756 megabytes of memory.
  • Schools are often looking to get rid of older hardware. I have a Micron TransPort ZX laptop that works just fine. At the moment, its task is to run and test ham radio software.
  • If you are with older kids, you have another resource for hardware. If your kid is upgrading to new hardware, you can snag onto to his old machine. I have an HP Pavlion ze4300 from that was from our son. Now, if he ever decides to get rid of his Mac, I know a place where it can contine to serve a useful life.
  • If free is not working, the try eBay.  It takes a little patience, but there are a lot of good deals just waiting to be snaged.  I haven’t bought a computer on eBay, but it is one of my major sources for parts.
  • There are also a number of sources for refurbished computers. When my ancient Toshiba Satellite died, I found a refurbished Dell Inspiron 8100 for a very reasonable price. I have had it for five years, and it still works like a champ – knock on wood.

You notice I didn’t mention all the sites that offer free computers if you read a million ads. Those sites are a total waste of time, when there are so many other sources that are a lot less painful.

If you have any other great sources for very cheap, with free being the best cheap deal, post a comment.
